Longhorn Impact Fellowship at Texas (LIFT) Info Session & Applications

The Longhorn Impact Fellowship at Texas, or LIFT, pairs student consultants with corporations, social enterprises, and nonprofits to help solve a sustainability-related challenge. Project topics are based in sustainable finance, corporate sustainability, impact innovation, and sustainability communications. Past projects created solutions for a wide range of issues, such as:
  • Understanding ESG and reporting trends in specific industries,
  • Conducting market research for impact-focused businesses,
  • Identifying sustainable revenue streams for nonprofits,
  • And many more!
Interdisciplinary teams of up to 5 students, both undergraduate and graduate, work with the clients an average of 5 hours a week for 12 weeks. Throughout this time, consultants are given support through online materials, a faculty advisor, and workshops from GSLI staff and industry experts. LIFT is selective and is open only to UT-Austin juniors, seniors, and graduate students. Clients have access to student applications and have an active role in selecting their consultants.

LIFT consultant applications for Fall 2022 will open on April 29th, 2022 and will be due on July 15th. Register to attend an April 20th information session at 5:30 p.m. here – https://bit.ly/LIFTFall22Info

2) From Paper to Practice: Implementing Civil Service Reform in Africa

April 25, 2022 | 12:15 - 1:15 pm | Zoom Webinar

On Monday, April 25, the Strauss Center is pleased to virtually welcome Martin Williams, Associate Professor in Public Management at the Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford University, on a talk on “From Paper to Practice: Implementing Civil Service Reform in Africa.” This is part of our Brumley Speaker Series.

Williams will speak about an upcoming book he’s working on. Improving the performance of the core civil service is one of the most important tasks facing government, but is also notoriously challenging. Based on studying 30 years of reforms across 6 countries in Africa, Williams’ book shows that these reforms have largely failed to achieve their goals because they have approached organizational change mainly as a matter of changing formal structures and processes through one-off projects. The book proposes a new approach in which reform is viewed not as a short period of rewriting rules but as catalyzing an ongoing process of continuous organizational change, and discusses strategies for reformers to achieve this in practice.

3) U.S. Science in the Era of U.S.-China Tensions

May 3, 2022 | 12:15 - 1:15 pm | Zoom Webinar

On Tuesday, May 3, the Strauss Center and Asia Policy Program are pleased to virtually welcome Molly Roberts, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of California San Diego, for a talk on “U.S. Science in the Era of U.S./China Tensions.” This is part of our Brumley Speaker Series.

Roberts will speak about her upcoming joint paper “The Impact of U.S.-China Tensions on U.S. Science,” published in collaboration with Ruixue Jia, Ye Wang, and Eddie Yang. The paper studies how recent investigations of foreign influence in research have affected productivity of U.S. scientists working in the life sciences. Using data from PubMed and Dimensions between 2010-2020, Roberts and her co-authors compared publications of scientists who collaborated exclusively with Chinese scientists with those working with scientists from other countries outside of China and the United States. The authors identified a decline in both the productivity and quality of publications by U.S. scientists whose work involved collaboration with scientists in China. In her talk with the Strauss Center, Roberts will discuss their research and its implications in the era of tensions between the United States and China.

Off-Campus Resources 2022

The Off-Campus Initiative within New Student Services is gearing up for summer and can use your help in a variety of ways.
  • Our Off-Campus Housing Finder is a great place to look at listings geared towards students, list sublets, and find roommates. This is an especially timely resource in terms of subleasing because you may have students who are leaving Austin for the summer but have a lease until the end of July. On the other hand there are students who might have a lease for Fall but need a place for a few months in the summer. These students can help each other out but using the subletting feature on the site.
  • Our website and Instagram are great places to refer students who want to learn more about the search process for living off campus, helpful information and resources from the City of Austin and also engaging events to help them explore Austin though our aUsTinite program.
  • We offer presentations throughout the year by request about finding housing, leasing, roommates, affordable housing and fun things to do in Austin by request. However, we will be offering a few sessions over the next few months on Zoom. Sessions will be listed on Hornslink and will also be promoted on our Instagram.
