The Department of Government is preparing for their 2nd annual Diversity in Government Graduate Studies (DiGGS) workshop, to be held May 31-June 3. This year, we plan to bring 15-20 current undergraduates or recent graduates from Texas schools to campus for a four-day workshop that is meant to introduce students from underrepresented groups to Ph.D. studies in political science. We’re focusing on individuals currently living in Texas, both because of transportation costs and because they may be naturally attracted to UT-Austin. The workshop will have some general sessions about what Ph.D. programs entail, how to identify programs that are a good fit, and what to think about when applying. We will also hold more substantive sessions that introduce the students to common social science approaches applied to a variety of topics.
We also hope to match each student with 1 faculty mentor and 1 graduate student mentor who they can meet during the week. Each mentor will meet with their mentee once during the week of the workshop, and subsequently be available over email (or other media) to offer advice and answer questions.
We are now accepting applications, with the deadline of April 1st. We hope to add diversity to our applicant pool and identify promising students who would be good fits and who we can successfully recruit.
