Sweatt Symposium for Civil Rights - November 10th

The 36th Annual Sweatt Symposium for Civil Rights will take place on Wednesday, November 10th, at 5 pm, in the LBJ Auditorium.

This year’s theme is Unnatural Causes: Health Equity IS a Civil Right. We will hear from 3 community members’ lived experiences with health inequity in their community (from right here in Austin, Tx). These stories will guide the conversation among Dr. Ryan Sutton, Dr. Desmar Walkes (City Medical Director), and Ms. Stephanie Hayden-Howard (Assistant City Manager for Health and Culture).

Come hear how cultural context, social determinants of health (food deserts, transportation issues, etc.), and political determinants of health (i.e., voting, census, etc.) all play a part in the disparate health outcomes for communities of color nationally and what we can do about it.

Front N’ Center will have a dance performance and sandwiches, hot chocolate station, and desserts will be served! You can learn more and register at https://diversity.utexas.edu/sweattsymposium/.
