As you may already be aware from recent news articles or President Hartzell’s recent State of the University Address, UT’s first-generation student population is continually expanding, and one out of every five students you connect with on campus are likely to identify as first-gen. With this in mind, we wanted to make sure you were informed of the many resources and support systems available to first-generation longhorns through our First-Gen Equity program!
Research shows that first-generation college students often find themselves learning to navigate aspects of their college experience on their own, without advice from close family members who have gone through the experience before them. First-Gen Equity aims to provide first-generation students with additional supports throughout their college career that will help them connect to and fully engage in all that the university has to offer, regardless of their incoming knowledge or experience, and has a dedicated team of first-generation staff members to help guide students from orientation to graduation, and beyond.
- Students who participate within the First-Gen Equity community are able to take advantage of any of the following whole-person development opportunities:
- First-Year Mentorship with our First-Gen Transition Coaches*
- Academic Coaching and Future Planning with our First-Gen Success Coaches
- Community Building through our First-Gen Welcome, First-Gen Monthly Social Events/Experiences, and socializing in our First-Gen Office Space SSB 3.200
- Attending our numerous Academic, Personal and Professional Workshops/Events and free drop-in and by-appointment STEM Tutoring
- Joining our Newsletter listserv, Canvas Page, and Social Media Channels (search: firstgenequity)
- Previous newsletters can be found here!
- Checking out items from our Technology Lending Library
- Receiving referrals to other campus resources and organizations
- Participating in our First-Gen Symposium, Tailgate, Graduation Ceremony, and Alumni Network
- Membership in a vibrant learning community of people who are invested in their future and want to work together to change the world!
*At this time, our year-long transition program experience is only offered to first-generation longhorns who, for whatever reason, were not recruited into another UTSP.
