Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship Now Open - Due: October 5, 2021

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to announce that the application for Gilman and Gilman-McCain Scholarships is now open! As U.S. Secretary of State Blinken and U.S. Secretary of Education Cardona recently conveyed in the new  Joint Statement of Principles for International Education, we believe it is more important than ever that all  Americans be equipped with global and cultural competencies to navigate the ever-changing landscapes of education, international business, scientific discovery and innovation, and the global economy.

Gilman Program Overview

The Gilman Program offers scholarships of up to $5,000 to U.S. undergraduate students of high financial need participating in credit-bearing abroad programs whose in person programs or internships start between December 1, 2021, to October 31, 2022. Virtual programs will be eligible through Summer 2022. Students studying critical need languages may be eligible to receive an additional award of up to $3,000. The application deadline is Tuesday, October 5, 2021, by 11:59pm Pacific Time.

• Advisors must certify applications by Tuesday, October 12, 2021.

• Students and Advisors will be notified of award status by December 2021.


As part of the Gilman Program, the following scholarships are also available:

Gilman-McCain Scholarship

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child dependents of active duty service members who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.

Global Partnership Scholarships, supported by:

Education New Zealand, the Embassy of France to the United States, the Embassy of Israel to the United States, the Luso-American Development Foundation, and Global Wales.
